Abstract
Introduction: The monitoring of pregnancy in Côte d'Ivoire is an issue that requires a socio-cultural dimension where the obstetric culture has its role to play. It is from the examination of thought patterns and care practices that the challenges of complications during pregnancy can be overcome. This finding is illustrated by the examination of local knowledge of obstetrics among the Darakokaha Tagbana. Methodology: Twelve older women, mostly mothers with traditional prenatal follow-up experience, traditional birth attendants, and traditional surrogate women, formed the survey population of a focus group on pregnancy characteristics and surveillance. This ethnographic approach has led to the logic underlying the monitoring of pregnancy among the Tagbana of Darakokaha. Results: Three forms of pregnancy are to be indicated: "lalchôrolô", "ficrôlô" and "lalpohorê". In the same way, three stages of pregnancy evolution are to be noted: "lala", "tionwinalêhê", "tchêlê" and "lah li tô". In addition, antenatal care has two basic practices: "alwêrê" and "fourri". All these characteristics of pregnancy and its surveillance stem from the complexity and richness of the Darakokaha Tagbana obstetric culture. These therapeutic methods remain essential for the monitoring of pregnancy in this community. Discussion: Tagbana cultural obstetrics is a model for examining risk factors during pregnancy. From a logical point of view, the social representation of the forms and stages of evolution and then the surveillance of the pregnancy actually translate into a knowledge and the prevention of the risks related to the pregnancy, for the well-being of the expectant and of her child.
