Knowledge, normativity, and virtue

Abstract
The post-Gettier
literature in epistemology tries to resolve the problem rose by Edmund Gettier
(1963), and in doing so epistemologists are also trying to answer two pertinent
questions: (1) what is the nature of knowledge? (2) why it is valuable? Ernest
Sosa (2007, 2009, and 2009a) has developed an account of epistemology known as
virtue epistemology; this account proposes to answer both the questions. In
this paper, I will sketch an analysis of Sosa’s virtue epistemology (VE), to
see whether it provides an answer to these questions and in doing so I will
also look at challenges faced by VE by focusing on two critiques Stewart Cohen
(2004), and Alvin Goldman (2004). In short, this paper is a defence of Sosa’s
VE.
